Shark Tank India Pitch:
Started in 2016, Infinity Insects takes care of exotic animals. They provide insects to breeders of exotic pets/animals. They serve mealworms, superworms, and other insects that are high in protein. They also have 100% biodegradable plastic-like products made from insects. These are made from insect larvae.
Their FY 20-21 sales reached ₹6 lakhs. They sell items on Amazon and Flipkart as well. 250 mealworms cost ₹750, and 1000 worms will cost ₹2000. Their gross profit is at 50%.
Shark Tank Negotiations:
Anupam asks why Silk larvae products are not exploding as they were discovered a long time ago, to which the entrepreneurs respond that they are not sure why. Anupam adds that it’s because it’s not cost-effective. Ashneer adds that he is not interested in this business as he doesn’t care enough to even try to understand anything about the pet industry.
Vineeta asks what people use instead of this product, to which the entrepreneurs respond that they use processed insects, which don’t have enough protein. Anupam asks how big the market size is. They don’t really have direct competition, and they feed in poultry, which is about ₹2000 billion rupees. Vineeta asks if there is data to prove that it works better than processed food. Entrepreneurs respond that it’s known that live insects have high protein.
Aman goes out, citing that it’s just not for him. He also comments that ₹6 lakhs of sales doesn’t mean much. Namita says that they are too early, so she goes out. Vineeta adds that it’s not an investable business, and she takes the exit as well. Anupam goes out, citing he doesn’t understand the business.
What Happened to Infinity Insects after Shark Tank?
Looks like the sharks may be right to stay out of this one. As of October 2023, Infinity Insects is still available on Amazon, but there is no news of business expansion or anything in that regard on their pages. We found their LinkedIn page, which hasn’t had any activity since March 2023.
